12. AMC Gremlin

Produced from 1970 to 1979, this unfortunate-looking car was once a fixture on the highways.

Produced by American Motors Corporation, the Gremlin was an economy car that was designed with more speed than other compact cars of the era.

Although this economical vehicle was renowned for its unique look at the time, it would be rather out of place on the roadways today.

The Gremlin screams 1970 and its look simply hasn’t held up over time. In fact, the designs seemed to get worse and worse as the decade drew to its close. The 1973 model is a real beast to avoid if you are ever in the vintage cars market. Of course, 1976 and 1977 Gremlins were pretty ugly too.

By 1980, AMC decided it needed a change and retired the Gremlin and switched to producing the AMC Spirit. During their heyday, the Gremlin was even driven by two future presidents, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Few people drive these old cars today. They’d get some long stares if they did. One sometimes still sees them tooling around Mexico, however, where the cars were also produced and sold to the Mexican market. The aptly named Gremlin is certainly a one-of-a kind as far as twentieth-century cars are concerned.
