18. Trabant
The Trabant seems as though all it needs is an image of Stalin’s face on every hubcap to complete the look.
These cars ooze Communistic sensibilities from their tire treads to their rooftops.
Produced in East Germany, the Trabant, unlike the Yugo, was made to last. Many people found that their Trabant ran fine for decades when adequately maintained.
Communist or not, these cars still boast the German ethic for quality and efficiency. Even so, they are not very enjoyable to look at so you might not want to drive yours by daylight!
Although the car was reported to easily fit four adults and luggage, it is a rather snug fit. In fact, this car was initially designed as a three-wheeled motorcycle. At some point, engineers decided to ditch the motorcycle plan and just make a car.
Their work has long paid off, however, as these cars have been going strong since the 1950s. In fact, there are even plans for updated hybrid models today. Somehow, though, they just haven’t caught on in North America. They look too much like the Eastern Bloc cars they are.
