You are supposed to say about yourself more than your t-shirt does. Wearing a funny t-shirt may steer the focus away from you and onto its content, and you don’t want that.
You want your personality to shine freely through open conversation, not through “I’m with stupid” or “Senior’s discount”.
Even if you think your shirt is funny, your date might disagree and get the wrong impression.
Stick to the basics, don’t opt for anything you would wear to paint your friend’s walls, and just pick your clothes the way you would pick flowers for her – ask a specialist if you’re not sure, which in the case of flowers is a sales person or in the case of an outfit a female friend or cousin.
Don’t fuss too much about your clothes, and instead use common sense. What you want to aim for is something between very casual and very dressy. Either extreme could get you into trouble.
