12 Life Skills You Need to Call Yourself a Man

10. Carve a Turkey

Remember all of those Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings your family had growing up where a giant turkey was carved up and served for dinner?

Odds are your father was the one carving up that bird because men have historically been the hunter and cleaner, while women cooked.

This tip isn’t meant to advance sexist stereotypes, but there is just something manly about knowing exactly what parts of that bird can be carved and served, and which are useless. So once that bird is out of the oven or roaster, put it on the carving board, sharpen your knife, and dig in.

Start by removing the thighs and legs. First thing to do is begin pulling the thigh or leg away from the bird and making cuts in the skin until the joint is exposed. Once the joint is exposed, pull with enough force to snap the joint. Mission accomplished.

From here you need to identify the bird’s backbone and ribcage. Start by making cuts along the backbone on either side to expose the breast meat. Slice off (in one huge chunk or portions) the breast meat by following the ribcage down from the backbone to gather the largest chunks of meat from the bird.
