12 Life Skills You Need to Call Yourself a Man

6. Sew a Button

Undoubtedly you have at least one item in your wardrobe with buttons. Suit coats, dress shirts, and pants all have at least one button on them and over time you are going to lose buttons.

The question now becomes what will you do to remedy the situation? Are you going to take it to your mother or sister and ask them to do it for you, or prove you can handle sewing something up and do it yourself?

All you need is a needle and 12 inches of color-coordinated thread. Start by putting two 1/8 inch stitches perpendicular to one another in the shirt where the button needs to go. Holding the button slightly away from the shirt, thread the needle up through one hole and down through the diagonally opposite hole. Repeat this process through the holes of the button four times.

When you’re done, wrap the thread around the pillar you’ve created while looping through the button holes, and push the needle through the pillar two to three times to form a tight closure. Cut off the thread when you’re finished and button up for work.
