12 Life Skills You Need to Call Yourself a Man

9. Wire a Ceiling Fixture

At some point in time you are no doubt going to consider remodeling your place of residence. The question is whether or not you will embark on this endeavor yourself or pay a real man to do the work? All joking aside, there are professionals for the larger tasks but if you cannot complete the smaller ones then perhaps homeownership isn’t up your alley.

One of the easiest ways to sharpen the appearance of any room is to replace that 20 year old light fixture with a new one. Better yet, why not add a ceiling fan light fixture while you’re at it! So here’s how you do it.

For starters, if you want to survive this task locate your home’s junction box and shut off the circuit to that room to cut the power. Start by removing the old light fixture and getting the new one out of the box.

Wiring a light fixture is easier than you think. Electricians wire each fixture and socket in the home with color-coded wires.

As you remove the old fixture you’ll see a black, white, and copper wire (known as ground), in addition to the fixture mount.

Start by wiring the new fixture up to the home electrical wires.

Black intertwines with black on the fixture, white with white on the fixture, and either intertwine the copper wires for grounding, or wrap it to the fixture mount for metal grounding (in the event the home grounding copper wire is not present.)

Finish the project up by screwing the new fixture into the existing fixture mount in the outlet, put in a new bulb, and turn the circuit back on. Now it’s time to literally bask in the glow of your achievement.
