8. Dissident Vacation Escort
If you happen to be a Chinese government critic, you are often “forced” to go on an all-expenses-paid holiday to the tropical island of Hainan, as government mandated vacations in order to keep you away from the country.
The funny thing is that they provide escorts during this vacation, which often feature luxurious hotels beside sun-drenched beaches, trips to tourist sites and lavish dinners.
“The hotel was luxurious and we ate excellent food, they paid for everything,” one of the escorts said of her guides. “We would spend up to 1,000 yuan ($160) on a single meal.”
