11. Edgar Allan Poe’s Death

Another poet, yet a bit more old school, and one of the greatest literary minds of the human civilization, ended his life in a way that remains a completely mystery.

Edgar Allan Poe’s death is said to be one of the most peculiar famous deaths, and is believed to be the result of a murder.

The Raven author left New York in 1849 and started his travels to Richmond, but only made it as far as Baltimore.

A passer-by noticed the delirious writer slouched in front of a bar on October 3, after which he was taken to a nearby hospital. The author died four days later.

The press attributed his death to alcohol poisoning, but scholars later discovered that rumors of his drug and alcohol abuse were greatly exaggerated. Poe’s death certificate cannot be found.
