14. The Black Dahlia
Elizabeth Short, a black-haired 22-year-old Hollywood actress, was found dead on Norton Avenue between 39th and Coliseum streets in Los Angeles, in 1947.
The actress’ body had been cut in half and appeared to have been drained of blood with immense precision.
The cold-blooded killer had also cut 3-inch gashes into each corner of Sharp’s mouth, thus creating a spooky clown-like smile. This unsolved crime inspired many movies, television specials, and books.
The crime has been called The Black Dahlia Murder. Although several people confessed to the crime, they were later released due to lack of evidence.
