5. The Hinterkaifeck

Germany’s Bavaria was hit with the biggest horror scenario imaginable in March, 1922, when a family was murdered in cold blood on their Hinterkaifeck farm with a pickaxe.

The victims, Andreas and Cazillia, their daughter Viktoria and her children Cazilla and Josef, and housemaid Maria, otherwise lived a peaceful, quiet life on the farm.

The scariest part of this unsolved crime is that Andreas told his neighbors, a few days before the horrid incident, that he found footprints leading to the house but not back, heard noises in the attic, and noticed that things appeared and went missing.

Autopsy reports showed that little Cazilla had been alive long enough to pull her own hair out. The murderer even lived in the house for a few days after killing everyone, while also feeding the family’s animals and eating their food before leaving.
