Essential Vitamins For Men – Vitamin D
Bruce B. Campbell, MD, a men’s health specialist at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington has some important updates for you, so make sure you listen carefully this man has to say.
Vitamin D
What many of us don’t know, it is actually pretty “hard to get enough vitamin D from food,” says Campbell. “Many men who work inside all day do not get enough exposure to the sun, which is needed for the body to manufacture vitamin D. Most men can benefit from taking 1,000 IU [international units] of vitamin D daily.”
Vitamin D is crucial, especially for middle-aged men as they need to absorb calcium in order to help them prevent weak muscles and bones. Also, Vitamin D deficiency is also proven to increase the risk for colon cancer, while men with low levels of this essential vitamin D are twice as likely to have a heart attack.
Good nutrition sources for Vitamin D include:
- Salmon
- Sardines
- Cod liver oil
- Milk
- Cheese
- Egg yolk
- Orange juice
- Yogurt
- Fortified breakfast cereal
Next time we will be talking about why Folic Acid is also crucial for your body. Stick around.
