Ten Used Porsche Models You Can Afford
3. Porsche 928
If you can find the right used model today, this high-performance, front-engined, V8 powered car can be a real bargain.
The 928, arguably the best GT ever made, offers good performance and great handling.
In its first-selling year of 1978, “Car and Driver” magazine proclaimed the 928 “the best car we’ve ever tested.”
And, featuring a front-mounted, water-cooled V8, 0 to 60 acceleration measured at 6.4 seconds and a top speed well over 140 mph, it’s hard to dispute the 928’s performance.
By the time the last 928 rolled off the line in 1995, its top speed surpassed 170 mph, and power had grown to a massive 350 hp. It’s a rock-solid luxury supercar by any name.
Today, the 928 tops the charts for its surprisingly low price of entry. Buyers can typically find a well-maintained 928 for around $10,000 to $15,000, with earlier cars often selling for less.
The biggest issue is the potential for costly repairs, though the engine and transaxle, usually the most expensive parts of the car, have proven themselves robust.
You rarely hear of 928 engines failing and the ones that don’t live long usually suffer from neglected maintenance.
