Ten Used Porsche Models You Can Afford
6. Porsche 944
Like the 924, it comes with all-independent suspension, a front/rear transaxle layout and the practicality of a spacious hatchback.
Unlike the 924, its engine is entirely Porsche: a water-cooled 2.4-liter, 2,749cc inline-four unit that makes around 150 horsepower.
In 1989, the engine was bumped up to 2,990 cc making 208 hp in the 16-valve S2 coupe model.
Critics of the day were blown away by the 944. “The 944 is one of the most exciting cars to come out of Zuffenhausen in a long time,” “Road & Track” reported. ”
It is spirited, yet smooth. It handles superbly, yet its ride is not harsh. It has swoopy looks, period…. If all of these accolades seem effusive, it’s because the 944 is the sort of car that makes driving fun.”
Today, the 944 is still a great handling car for its $5,000 to $15,000 price tag.
But the real beauty of the 944 is that it’s both reliable and extremely well-balanced – even a novice can drive this model quickly with relative ease. In fact, the 944 is considered by many to be the perfect starter Porsche.
The only downside is the lack of storage space in the Cabriolet version.
